Seven-year-old’s close call with abandoned needle

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy had a close call after coming across an abandoned needle in Cumbernauld.

The youngster discovered the rusty discarded needle in an area of overgrowth on Clouden Road on Wednesday, October 10.

Police say the boy touched the needle although it did not prick his skin.

The youngster was taken to hospital to be checked over and he is described as low risk.

Meanwhile, police have upped their patrols in the area but they are still warning residents to be aware of anything of this nature lying on the streets.

North Lanarkshire Council will be contacted to organise a clean-up of the area and they have advised the community to contact them should they come across anything of this nature.

Ken Forbes, open spaces manager with North Lanarkshire Council, said: “We have a specially trained team of employees who deal with the safe removal and disposal of sharp objects.

“If members of the public discover any sharp or dangerous items, they should report it immediately to our Northline contact centre on 01698 403200.”

Meanwhile, Community Safety Office PC Michael Duffy is available to give talks to schools about the issue which will make children more aware of the dangers of going into areas like this.
