Snow on George Square for festive firework spectacular

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Glasgow following last night’s festive fun.

Glasgow Loves Christmas was launched on Sunday evening as more than 12,000 gathered at George Square to watch the festive lights go on and the fireworks go off.

Lord provost Sadie Docherty led the countdown alongside Stephen McGuire (11) before pressing the button on thousands of twinkling lights — and some festive fake snow to surprise those watching the show.

Councillor Docherty said: “What an occasion — we have certainly started the Christmas celebrations in style. I had a great night and I’m sure everyone who was fortunate enough to get a ticket would agree that the entertainment was fantastic.

“The lights will be on until after Christmas so there is plenty of time to enjoy them — and, as the city shimmers and sparkles, perhaps we can all take a moment to reflect on the true message of this joyous season, to love others and think about how we can bring a little light into the world.”

The festive fun continues at George Square when the ice rink opens, on November 27, and skaters are welcome every day (except Christmas) until December 31.
