Sorrow as much-loved Carol dies following road accident

The wife of longstanding Cumbernauld councillor Stephen Grant has died following a road accident in Glasgow.

Kildrum grandmother Carol Grant took ill at the wheel of her car on Monday, April 27.

The incident took place in Glasgow’s east end. No other vehicle was involved in the Cumbernauld Road crash.

Paramedics rushed Carol to Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary. However, she was transferred to the specialist Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Clydebank.

It’s been confirmed that Carol passed away on Saturday, May 2. She was 55.

Carol is survived by Stephen, their daughters Lesley (27) and Laura (24) plus their two grandchildren Lucy (6) and Laila who is 3.

Councillor Grant praised all hospital staff who cared for his wife, describing their expertise as ‘‘second to none.

“I have nothing but admiration for them,’’ he said.

“We are all devastated. Carol had seemed in excellent health and this was completely unexpected.

“The girls and I would like to pass on our thanks to everyone who has been in touch. sent cards and telephoned.

“We are quite overwhelmed by the messages of support and condolences. It has a great comfort to receive so many,’’added the Councillor.

His Labour colleague and North Lanarkshire Group leader Jim McCabe paid tribute to Carol, whose death has shocked so many in the local Labour movement and beyond.

Councillor McCabe said: “I knew Carol very well. She was a lovely woman, very caring and kind.

“This is a terrible tragedy for Stephen and the girls and my thoughts are with them.

No funeral details had been released by time of going to press.

Carol, nee Milligan, was a former pupil of Cumbernauld High School.

Her husband Stephen represents Abronhill, Kidrum and the Village.
