Strathcarron supporter honoured

A woman from Kilsyth has been awarded the British Empire Medal.

Moira Hay (76) now lives in Dunblane but she may be well known to our readers as she was born at Allanfauld Farm and also worked as a nurse at Strathcarron Hospice for 21 years.

Moira has supported Strathcarron for over 30 years and raised over £90,000 for the charity by hosting lunches and other events, as well as publishing a cookbook filled with her own recipes.

Moira remains modest about her achievements however.

“I think the award means more to my friends and family than it does to me,” she said. “I don’t feel I have done anything special, I just did what I wanted to do.”

Moira was honoured at a civic reception where the medal was given to her by the Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross, Mel Jameson. Depute Lieutenant Lady Sara Cornwallis and Provost Liz Grant.

Moira was nominated for the award by her friend Morag Adams, who spoke to Lord Gordon Robertson at an event Moira was hosting in 2012.

Moira is married to Ian, They have four children and nine grandchildren.

Angela Gilles, fundraising manager at Strathcarron, said: “Strathcarron Hospice is delighted to hear that Moira has been awarded the British Empire Medal for her charitable work. Moira worked for many years at the hospice and has continued to fundraise on our behalf and we are very grateful for her efforts.”

The British Empire Medal was reintroduced to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
