Sub-group strikes out on its own

A GROUP which has amassed an increasing number of members while under the umbrella of another organisation has decided to strike out on its own.

Cumbernauld Community Forum’s Environmental Sub Group will now stand independent with the full blessing of the forum - and stage an inuagural meeting at Cumbernauld College next Thursday, March 24, at 7.15pm.

The group will be led by former Cumbernauld Development Corporation landscape boss Bobby Johnstone,

Mr Johnstone said: “The truth is that the group had become too big for the forum. We felt that the discussion of our business was taking up too much time within the forum itself. That is why we have decided to set up on our own.

“The good news is that a lot of other groups are getting involved with us such as Friends of Cumbernauld House Park, Cumbernauld Gardening Club plus Scottish Water. I am also very pleased to say that we have a good working relationship with North Lanarkshire Council.

“We are a completely non-political organisation and we want to get as many people involved as possible. The environment is what Cumbernauld was built on -more so in my view than any other Scottish new town. It needs to be looked after.’’

Meanwhile forum chairman Billy Lees has given the move the thumbs-up.

“I wish Bobby all the best with this. It’s a good idea. It also gives the group the chance to apply for funding for various projects it wants to take on,” he said.
