Tesco’s plans for Condorrat are moving forward

A controversial proposal which could bring the third Tesco to Cumbernauld is set to be delivered into the hands of planners.

The supermarket giant intends to partially convert Condorrat Social Club into a Tesco Express in a move that has divided the community.

Members of the club voted to allow the conversion but traders in Main Road and Condorrat Community Council are against it.

Its opponents claim that it will kill off small businesses in this main thoroughfare and spark traffic chaos throughout the village.

The issue was the subject of a packed public meeting three weeks ago.

Meanwhile Tesco said that its plans were moving up a gear despite this level of public opposition.

A Tesco spokesman confirmed: “We expect to submit a planning application within the next few weeks.

“We are in regular contact with members of the local community and we will keep them updated on any developments,’’ he added.

However community council chairwoman Stacey Egan said that the fight would continue, as feelings continued to run high.

She added: “As far as I am concerned nothing has changed here.

“I emailed Tesco with a further list of questions after we had our public meeting.

“I am hoping that I get an answer back this week,’’ she added.
