That's some mob!

CUMBERNAULD house was the site of a 'Flash Mob' on Sunday which attracted DOUBLE the expected turnout and saw people travelling from far and wide to attend.

The event was held to support the 'Save and Preserve Cumbernauld House' campaign which featured in last week's News & Chronicle.

Robert McAllen, one of the founders of the campaign, said the day went "spectacularly" well - adding that it coincided with the petition hitting the 1000 signatures mark on the morning of the Flashmob which was excellent and the Facebook group numbering 1300 people the same day.

Describing the atmosphere as "superb", he said: "Held on a day which could easily have been overshadowed by Mother's Day activities and a televised football match, over 130 people came along to show their support with some people travelling from as far afield as Dundee and Dunfermline to take part.

"At 1pm, during a rare moment of good weather, everyone gathered on the steps of the house and chanted 'Save Our House' while a bagpiper entertained the crowd.

"A real feeling of community spirit was apparent as people from all walks of life came together to unite behind a common cause.

"In some cases even entire families came along to show support for the preservation and re-opening of the house in an issue which spans the generations.

"The 'Save and Preserve Cumbernauld House' group have enjoyed phenomenal success and after only six weeks now has over 1300 members on Facebook, and an online petition which boasts over 1000 names."

Set up by Cumbernauld residents Robert McAllen, Patrick Haughney, Stephen O'Connor and Adam Smith, (pictured) the group says it organised the event to show the campaign does not only exist online and is taking physical action to have the house returned to public ownership and re-opened to the public.

The campaign is also continuing to attract support from all over the world, and as well as Bill Wyman and Lynn Ferguson, as reported in last week's News & Chronicle, backing has come from celebrities such as TV home makeover experts Justin Ryan and Colin McAllister, radio and TV personality Phill Jupitus, and Scottish comedians Stu Who? and Janey Godley.

Comedian Greg Hemphill of Still Game and Chewing The Fat, and Tom Urie, who stars in River City and The Karen Dunbar Show, have also signed up.

Jamie Hepburn MSP has also joined the Facebook group, adding: "The organisers of this group to save and preserve Cumbernauld House are to be congratulated and I am pleased to see such a wide range of celebrity support.

"I'm very supportive of calls for Cumbernauld House to be preserved for the benefit of the community in Cumbernauld and for future generations to have access to this important part of our local heritage.

"When Mike Russell visited the House as Culture Minister, he was impressed by the campaign and the work that had been done so far to protect the house."

Gregg McClymont, the Labour candidate for the Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East seat in the next general election, chatted with his former history teacher Councillor Tom Johnston.

"It was a pleasure to attend Sunday's Flash Mob. Cumbernauld House was part of my childhood and it's sad to see it in disuse.

"Robert McAllen, Stephen O'Connor, Adam Smith and Patrick Haughney have done us all a service in raising the profile of the House and bringing its plight to the community's attention. Their enthusiasm is infectious."
