There's nothing fantastic about piles of plastic

Having twice survived cancer Myff Allcock of Caldergrove, Motherwell, decided she wanted to make a donation to Macmillan Cancer Support.

While living in Cheshire she had previously collected thousands of plastic bottle tops which the charity arranged to have collected and sent to a company called GHS Recycling in Portsmouth.

Having moved to Motherwell with her husband Paul eight years ago Myff decided to do another collection.

A year ago she announced her plan at the Salvation Army Corps in Hamilton and has been receiving hundreds of plastic bottle tops every week.

However, when she contacted Macmillan to ask for them to get picked up she was told the charity doesn’t offer this service now, and she cannot afford to transport them to Portsmouth by herself.

Myff said: “The last time I did it I got around a penny a lid so I thought it was well worth doing a collection again.

“I contacted Macmillan and they liked the idea and everyone at the Corps has really got behind it.

“Now though I find myself with around 16,000 plastic bottle tops and I don’t know what to do with them.

“My hope is that maybe someone with a van or lorry might be heading down to the south coast and could drop them off.

“Alternatively, perhaps a local organisation could have a use for them and I can keep my dream of raising money for Macmillan alive.”
