Three women mugged in the space of a few days in Cumbernauld

THREE women have been targeted by thieves for their handbags in the space of a few days in Cumbernauld.

Police are investigating the separate incidents in the town since Monday, February 4, which has resulted in three women, aged 51, 76 and 81, having their handbags stolen.

The News and Chronicle reported on the first mugging in our latest edition on Wednesday, February 6.

A 51-year-old was approached by a young man at around 6.10pm on the footbridge between Condorrat and Westfield on Monday, February 4.

He grabbed the woman’s handbag, which contained a two figure sum of cash, a mobile phone and personal cards, before making off in the Condorrat direction.

The suspect is described as 16 to 20 years old, and he was wearing a light coloured top.

The distressed woman made her way home and immediately contacted the police.

The second incident happened between 4.45pm and 5.15pm on Tuesday, February 5,

The 81-year-old victim was outside her home address in Morar Court, Condorrat, when a man approached her from behind and grabbed the handbag from her shoulder before making off.

Police say there is no description of the man.

A third bag snatch occurred at around 2.45pm on Wednesday, February 6, near to the play park on Hillcrest Avenue.

The 76-year-old victim was on her way to the local health centre when she was confronted by a man.

He grabbed her bag from her shoulder causing the strap to break.

He made off in the direction of the Carbrain area.

Police say the stolen bag may have contained a three-figure sum of cash and personal items.

The suspect is described as between 22 and 25 years old, 5’ 7” in height and he was wearing a grey coloured hooded top.
