Top choir needs a conductor

One of Scotland’s favourite choirs – the Cumbernauld Male Voice Choir – has a pressing problem that’s already lasted four months.

Since the retiral of its conductor John Seggie the choir has struggled to find a replacement, and has now asked the News and Chronicle to make their dilemma more widely known.

A spokesman for the choir said: “After the choir’s three sell-out concerts in the New Town Hall last May, the choir knew that conductor John Seggie, accompanist Aileen Kelly and compere Murdie Fletcher had all decided to retire from the choir after many years of service.

“Since then the committee of the choir has been searching for a new conductor and a news accompanist, but so far, despite a number of possible candidates having been approached, only an accompanist has been found.”

He added: “By this time of the year the choir would normally be busy pracising for the first of its regular concerts around the church and village halls of Central Scotland, but all bookings have had to be cancelled until a permanent conductor can be found.”

The 30-plus members are from areas including Kilsyth, Lenzie and Falkirk, but, says the choir’s spokesman, are in danger of losing heart.

“They are keen to see the choir get back to its normal level of activity and to recrut some new members to replace the few who have retired.

“None of them foresaw it would be so difficult to find a new conductor for the choir”.

Many local people will know the choir from flagship events such as the annual joint performance with local schoolchildren in Kildrum church, but as possibly best the best known performance act in the Cumbernauld area they are widely seen as a first class local institution that deserves every support.
