Town centre footbridge to be demolished

CUMBERNAULD’s “bridge to nowhere”, the long-disused Tummel Way footbridge, will be torn down next week.

The town centre landmark has been sealed off for many years for safety reasons.

However Campsies Centres (Cumbernauld) Ltd will soon spend £1 million replacing it with a new crossing. This fulfils a contractual stipulation around approving the Antonine Centre, as Campsies is required to provide a complete walking route around the town centre without doubling back.

But questions are being raised as to whether there is any point in replacing the Tummel Way bridge, with a suggestion that the money might be better invested in sprucing up the town centre bus station.
