Delegates will mark 1959 minedisaster

North Lanarkshire Trade Union Council delegates are planning their annual visit to the Auchengeich Memorial to commemorate the loss of 47 miners from across Lanarkshire in one of Scotland’s worst mining disasters.

A new memorial was unveiled on the site in 2009, marking the 1959 mining disaster in which widowed 41 women and left 76 children without a father.

This year’s commemoration event will be held on Sunday, September 14 at the Aucheingeich Memorial Site in Moodiesburn, where a wreath will be laid.

Meanwhile next month there will be a March and Rally for “Britain Deserves a Pay Rise” on Saturday, October 18, which is to be held in Glasgow and which will be organised by the STUC.
