North Lanarkshire Council’s Trading Standards Service is alerting the public on safety information that should be marked on fireworks packaging.

Officers advise that fireworks without these standards clearly stated could be dangerous.

Fireworks should be clearly labelled to show that they comply with European product safety standards or UK safety standards. They should also be marked with information including the name of the manufacturer or importer, the name, type and category of firework and instructions for use.

Always read the instructions carefully and make sure that the fireworks you buy are suitable for home use by consumers.

“We would strongly advise people not to buy fireworks to use at home, but to go along to one of our free displays in Airdrie, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld and Strathclyde Park, Motherwell,” said Councillor Michael McPake, Vice-Convener of the Environmental Services Committee.

“Fireworks can cause severe injury if they’re not handled properly so it’s much safer to attend an organised display.

“However, if anyone does decide to buy their own fireworks, make sure they go to a reputable retailer and not people touting fireworks in the streets, a market stall or from vans. They should check the fireworks are clearly labelled with the proper safety standards and information, then follow the Fireworks Code when setting them off.”
