Lorry driver is killed in Carstairs crash

At around 1.30pm, a red Mercedes lorry, travelling west on the A70 at Carstairs, collided with a white DAF lorry and a brown Vauxhall Insignia travelling east.

The 45-year-old driver of the lorry died at the scene. The 47-year-old driver of the Vauxhall Insignia was taken to Wishaw General Hospital where he received treatment for a collar bone injury.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to telephone Road Policing at Motherwell on the non-emergency telephone number 101.

The accident came just a week after Clydesdale’s top two police officers, Chief Inspector David Walker and Inspector Scott Jones, warned they would not be complacent with road deaths in the area despite a dramatic reduction in road traffic deaths in Clydesdale over the past four years.

In the last 12 months seven people had lost their lives on Clydesdale’s rural roads compared to 17 deaths four years ago.

However, in the wake of last week’s tragedy, Inspector Jones has again urged the public to continue to be vigilant and to take their time while travelling around Clydesdale.
