Team spirit helps disaster victim Alix

Alix Stewart, 14, suffered broken bones and serious internal injuries when she was struck by the out of control council vehicle that caused carnage in Glasgow’s Queen Street and George Square.

But the high level of physical fitness she’s said to have gained through training and competing with Cumbernauld’s Lady Rocks basketball club is said to be playing a major role in aiding her recovery.

Meanwhile her team-mates have been warmly praised for the moral support they’ve given her, particularly in the days immediately after the accident.

Alix had been Christmas shopping in Glasgow with her mum, Jacqueline, and sister Emily, 16, when disaster struck.

She’s said to have left them to meet friends in front of the statue of the Duke of Wellington on Queen Street, and she and these two other girls are all said to have been hit by the rogue lorry as it headed towards George Square.

Alix was reportedly dragged along the road underneath the lorry before being left - badly injured but alive - at the junction of Queen Street and St Vincent Place.

Seconds later the lorry ploughed into shoppers on the other side of the square, with devastating results.

Alix is said to have undergone many hours of operations at Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary.

Her bravery and will to win is said to be helping her to pull through, and meanwhile her family have thanked her team-mates at Lady Rocks, which meets at St Maurice’s High School, for their heartfelt support.

Alix, of Kilmalcolm, has also been receiving the support of staff and fellow students at her school in Houston, Renfewshire.
