Travellers set up camp in Westfield

Cumbernauld is once again the stopping off point for a group of travellers who have selected a new location for their temporary home.

Although Greenfaulds and the area bordering Westway Retail Park in Wardpark have proved to be popular in the past, caravans have been set up in Westfield.

The vehicles were first seen arriving in the Leckethill area on Wednesday, August 5.

Both police and a specially designated travellers’ liaison officer allied to North Lanarkshire Council’s housing department have visited the site repeatedly.

Their operations manager Stephen Llewellyn confirmed that the travellers had been asked how long they intended to stay in Westfield.

He said: “We’re aware of a number of travellers’ caravans located at a car park in the Westfield area, and we are closely monitoring this situation with Police Scotland.

“In the meantime we are in discussions with our legal services and will maintain regular visits to ensure everything is in order.

“Should any clean up of the area be required we will carry this out.”
