Vandals target kids’ play area in Cumbernauld

ONGOING vandalism at a park in Abronhill is preventing other facilities for young people from being built, community activists have warned.

ONGOING vandalism at a park in Abronhill is demoralising people who are trying to improve the area’s quality of life.

The skatepark is one of the few such facilities in Abronhill, and in the last few weeks it has been repeatedly targeted. It is currently covered in graffiti and a decorative wall surrounding it is being gradually dismantled.

The park was built some six years ago thanks to people power - the volunteer-run Abronhill Regeneration Forum raised the £250,000 needed to construct it, with North Lanarkshire Council contributing towards maintenance.

Helen Hutcheson of Abronhill Learning Trust said: “The park was built by the people but the damage, especially to the wall, has been particularly bad in the last three weeks.

“It’s difficult to see how we can raise the money for anything else if the money we do bring in is all spent on repairs.”
