Walkers put their best feet forward

A GIANT fundraising effort which is now in its 14th year has been judged a major success after a host of local groups and individuals pulled on their walking shoes and took to the great outdoors.

The Rotary Club of Cumbernauld’s Annual Charity Canal walk has swelled the coffers of good causes like Cumbernauld Action Care for the Elderly and Redburn School - by allowing locals to ‘join on’ this massive event along the Forth and Clyde Canal.

As ever, the money they raise via sponsorship is theirs to donate to the charity of their choice, in a move which has helped many a local group fund a project which might not have attracted cash from elsewhere.

Sunny skies - the likes of which we have not seen much of lately- certainly helped as participants enjoyed some fresh air into the bargain.

Many walkers take part annually and plenty newcomers have committed themselves to taking part in next year’s event - which has taken on extra momentum as budget cuts bite.

Co-ordinator Professor Frank Clark and former past president said: “With charities and community groups feeling the effects of the economic situation, it provides an ideal safe and fun way to raise sponsorship money for pet causes.

“We are grateful for the support of British Waterways, Cumbernauld College, Brodies Labels. Barrs PLC and Envirosan – without them this event would not be possible.”

Frank added: “It’s staggering to think that in the first 10 years alone we’ve enabled local groups here to raise over one third of a million pounds.”
