Working from home just the job for Sean

A FAMILY in Kilsyth is benefiting from a DIY training course which aims to help people gain employment.

North Lanarkshire's Working's ACCESS programme is providing training in skills such as tiling, wallpapering and painting.

And now a group of participants, including 19-year-old Sean Differ, have been working on re-decorating a house in Kilsyth.

And not just any house, but Sean's own home!

Sean, who has been out of work since leaving school, explained: "After I was offered a place on the 'DIY at Home' program, my mum was asked if the training could actually take place at our home and she agreed.

"My mum is unable to do anything herself because she has arthritis in her spine and I just didn't have the skills to get on with it myself."

He added: "This course really helped me to learn new things and get into the way of working, as well as help my mother and I make a home.

"It was an amazing experience as we could see our home transform over the course of just a few days and I learned so much in the process.

"As well as helping me feel more settled at home, it has really got me thinking about what I can do with the rest of my life and how I can achieve it."

And one of the other participants, artist Kevin Rafferty from Airdrie, even painted a portrait of Sean and his mum on a living room wall.
