Wreath laying was ‘an honour’ for Alex Alum

A Cumbernauld man was expected to represent his regiment at a Remembrance Sunday event held in London’s by laying down a wreath at The Cenotaph.

The televised event which is centred around The Cenotaph at Whitehall included Alex Alum, of North Carbrain, laying down the wreath as he represented the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

The 65-year-old, who is a well-known face in the town, joined army when he was around 17 years old.

He spent six years in the Royal Scots Greys, which later amalgamated to become the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in 1972.

Alex also spent 10 years in the territorial army before he became a HGV driver for Tennent’s Caledonian Brewery.

He was selected with the honour of laying down the wreath because of his 30 years commitment as a member of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Regimental Association.

A delighted Alex said: “I will be marching in the parade and I have been honoured to carry the wreath to hand over at The Cenotaph to be laid.

“We have five branches up and down the country so it is a real honour to be chosen to do this. “

He added:“I have always been a military person.

“I have seen young veterans at events who have lost their limbs. I have visited many war graves.

“And I really think that our war veterans and the fallen should never be forgotten.”
