Many people say commercialism is getting out of hand. And a traipse around the shops any time from early October onwards will see you inundated with Hallowe’en costumes, fireworks and Christmas crackers. It’s only a matter of time before the Valentine’s cards and Easter eggs appear.

But on the streets it seems a very different story. Last week I helped out at a Rainbow Guide unit, and although all the wee ones had dressed up they were perfectly happy with dookin’ for apples and the like, no need for expensive banners and decorations to add to their fun.

And as for the guisers?
