YMCA served notice to quit

A HOUSING charity which has provided accommodation for vulnerable youngsters for decades has been served with a notice to quit its premises by North Lanarkshire Council.

The News and Chronicle has learned that the council has taken the get-tough move to regain possession of eight four-apartment flats in Tarbolton Road which are overseen by the Cumbernauld YMCA.

Although the council had permitted the charity to use the building rent free for years, it argues that this cannot continue because the flats are need to ease the severe shortage of suitable emergency and temporary accomodation in the town.

It transpires that a fifth of applications for this type of housing come from the Cumbernauld area.

However the council is legally required to find alternative accomodation for the existing residents.
