Parents from Cumbernauld and beyond called into question after trouble in Kilsyth

Police were called in to disperse groups of youths who had flocked to the usually tranquil surroundings of Colzium Estate on Saturday, February 6 -and created a nuisance that ended in four arrests.

The incident saw young lockdown flouters gather in the historic parkland in the afternoon - and officers were called in amidst fears that social distancing had gone out the window, that some of the teens were drinking and indeed that they were out-of-towners who had specifically travelled from other areas to meet up.

Trouble flared in disgraceful scenes - when  two 15-year-old males were arrested and charged with threatening and abusive behaviour towards police - but the matter did not end there.

For a 14-year-old female anad a 15-year-old male were charged with consuming alcohol in a public place.

Significantly, there were reports that the young revellers had been dropped off at Colzium by parents in their cars - in a move that has tested the patience of officers who have expressed frustration that adults and minors alike cannot seem to heed a stay at home warning.

Police believe that some of the crowd were from Cumbernauld - and from Falkirk.

Police believe that social media had played a part in the episode which they believe was pre-arranged.

Communities Inspector Neil MacLeod confirmed: “ As a result of the police presence in the area a number of groups were dispersed and also in a two hour period between 3.30pm and 5.30pm

“What was evident from interaction with the groups that were gathering was that many of them weren’t from the Kilsyth area and it was apparent that they were dropped off in the area by parents/guardians to meet with friends.

”I would appeal to parents and guardians to be more aware of their children’s whereabouts and indeed what they are doing.

“Police will continue to provide patrols of the park and surrounding area when priorities allow and robust action will continue to be taken regarding any offences detected.”
