Scotland recently experienced bright skies and warm temperatures, with highs of 23C in some parts of the country.

The month of May has become the sunniest calendar month on record in Scotland, with some counties in eastern Scotland having recorded their driest spring in a rainfall series from 1862.

But now the next few days of June are forecast to see a change in conditions as heavy downpours are set to hit.

Here’s what the weather will be like over the next few days.

Tuesday (2 June)

Tuesday afternoon will begin cloudy, before heavy rain hits becomes more constant in some parts, continuing throughout the day.

However, the temperature will then be relatively warm for some, with highs of 25C during the afternoon in some parts, and an overnight temperature of around 10C for most areas.

In Edinburgh, heavy rain will hit from 3pm until the early hours of Wednesday (3 June).

Elsewhere in Glasgow, there will be a mixture of heavy and light rain from 6pm onwards, with an overnight temperature of 11C.

The Met Office forecast for Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian & Borders said, “Cloud then building, with some heavy showers breaking out in parts of the Lothians and Borders in the afternoon, but many staying dry. Very warm or hot.”

Tuesday evening will see a mainly dry start to evening, but a few showers will then develop, some of which will be heavy.

There will be further rain overnight, but this will become light and patchy by morning.

Wednesday (3 June)

Rain is set to ease off in most parts of the country on Wednesday, with cloudy conditions and some areas set to see a little rain.

The Met Office said: “A few sunny interludes towards the west coast, but for most, a cloudy day, and in the east there will be a little light rain. Much cooler especially in the east.”

Edinburgh will be cloudy throughout the day, but a lot cooler than Tuesday, with temperatures dropping to 12C during the day, with an overnight temperature of 8C.

Glasgow will also see cloudy conditions throughout the day on Wednesday, with a peak of 15C and an overnight temperature of 9C.

What will the weather be like this weekend?

The Met Office UK outlook for this weekend forecasts it to be “rather cool with a shift to a more changeable regime”.

Sunny spells and showers are likely across many parts, but the most frequent showers are expected across the north and east with a longer spell of rain too.

However, the best of the drier conditions are likely to be in the south and west, where there should be a good deal of bright or sunny spells.

Looking further ahead, there seems to be a continuation of further outbreaks of rain or showers, but there is uncertainty with this.

Longer, drier and brighter spells could develop generally towards mid-June, especially across northern and western areas.
