16 battle for top eight spot

SUNDAY night saw week five of the Six Week League in the Red Triangle Snooker Club, when 16 players battled it out for a top eight knockout qualification spot.

In the first round Andy Jackson beat last week’s winner Martyn Shields 2-0, Garry Coats beat the club champion Mark Caulfield 2-0, Kevin Glen, who was still seathing after losing in the IM5 pool event, was defeated 2-1 by Martin Cook, Billy Reid beat John “Jammy” Dempster 2-0, “The Carbrain Cueman” Davie Hutchison was beaten by the in-form Scott Davidson 2-1, Colin Allen, who was sitting pretty at the top of the league, lost 2-1 to John Malcolm, and the newest member of the “Ton Club” Dougie Fraser beat Stevie McMillan 2-1. During the week Dougie knocked in his first-ever 100 break. A fine 101 against John Talent. In the last match Willie Scott beat tournament newcomer Gordon Smith 2-0.

In the quarter-finals Andy Jackson beat Garry Coats 2-0, Martin Cook played well and won 2-1 against Billy Reid, after a titanic battle Scott Davidson beat John Malcolm 2-1, and Willie Scott beat Dougie Fraser by the same scoreline, 2-1.

In the semi-finals Martin Cook and Willie Scott proved too strong for their opponents Andy Jackson and Scott Davidson. Cook beat Jackson 2-0 as did Scott against Davidson.

The final between Willie Scott and Martin Cook will be played during the week.

The final league placings after week five were: 1, Willie Scott 51pts; 2, Martyn Shields and Colin Allen 49pts; 4, Andy Jackson 47pts; 5, Mark Caufield, John Malcolm, Garry Coats, Stevie McMillan and Scott Davidson, all on 43pts.

The knockout stages, which will be played next Sunday, look like - Willie Scott v Garry Coats, John Malcolm v Colin Allen or Martyn Shields, Andy Jackson v Scott Davidson or Mark Caulfield, Stevie McMillan v Colin Allen or Martyn Shields.
