Another great week for Lumsdens

Following her performance in reaching her first Pro-Series final on home ground in Glasgow the previous week, the 17-year-old continued her good form on Wearside.

She opened by coming from behind to defeat seventh seed Harriet Dart, from London, 1-6 6-4 6-2 and then accounted for Danish qualifier Emilie Francati 6-3 6-4.

Maia then took a career best ranking scalp by knocking Belgium’s Elyne Boeykens, world ranked 360, winning comprehensively 6-0 6-4 to set up a semi-final with number two seed Manon Arcangioli of France.

And she came desperately close to making it two finals on the trot.

Maia took the first set on the tiebreak before her French opponent fought back to take the second set 6-4 and the third set went to a deciding tie break which Arcangioli just edged 7-5.

It was also another good week for Maia’s younger brother Ewen.

After his success the previous week in helping the British under-16 team qualify for the European finals, Ewen teamed up with Polish doubles partner Wojciech Marek to reach the final of the Yonex ITF tournament in Hamburg.

After receiving a bye in the first round Lumsden and Marek, seeded eight, were straight sets winners over Belgians Guillaume Dermiens and Charles Tzicas in the second round, going through 6-2 6-4.

They then beat Tom Cecchetto (Switzerland) and Artem Karamalak (Russia) 7-6 6-2 in the quarter-finals and German duo Kai Lemstra and Patrick Zahraj 6-4 6-4 in the semi-finals to reach the final without dropping a set.

However their run came to an end when they went down 7-6 6-2 to another German pairing, Jason Hildebrand and Marvin Moeller.
