Atief shines in world contest

The World Championships, which are held once every two years, took place in the birthplace of taekwondo, Gyeong-ju, the capital of the ancient Silla dynasty. This event, which had attracted 149 countries, had over two thousand competitors.

In the under 80kg, which Atief participated, there were over 80 competitors. He showed clear superiority when he won his first two fights by a 12 points gap difference. He lost in the final 16 to Greece by a point (6-5). Had he won he would have been a bronze medallist.

Atief was coached by Grandmaster T. K. Loh, 9th dan, under whom he trained.

Following in Atief’s footsteps are 12-year-old Cumbernauld students Victoria Hutcheson and Callum McCann. Victoria won the Traditional Taekwondo team championship event with a gold medal position in the junior female event and Callum took the silver medal position in the junior under 44kg.

Atief Arshad is now undergoing the Olympic qualifiers trial with his first championships in Baki in Azerbaijan next month followed by the Bangkok Open in November.

If you wish to be trained to the highest level then join these students and train under Grandmaster T. K. Loh in Glencryan School in Greenfaulds on a Monday and Wednesday from 7-8pm for the beginners class.
