Atief shines in world contest

CUMBERNAULD taekwondo student Atief Arshad fought and reached the top 16th position in the World WTF championships in Gyeong-ju, South Korea.

The World Championships, which are held once every two years, took place in the birthplace of taekwondo, Gyeong-ju, the capital of the ancient Silla dynasty. This event, which had attracted 149 countries, had over two thousand competitors.

In the under 80kg, which Atief participated, there were over 80 competitors. He showed clear superiority when he won his first two fights by a 12 points gap difference. He lost in the final 16 to Greece by a point (6-5). Had he won he would have been a bronze medallist.
