Biggar Rugby Club blow 10-point lead in Peebles defeat

This denied Biggar a perfect three wins out of three in BT National League Division 2 this season and gave Peebles a first league success of this campaign.

The match had started with Biggar enjoying a prolonged period of pressure in the Peebles 22 with a total of 13 phases resulting in a try for Andrew Orr, the back row/hooker eventually diving over from close range.

Carne Green added the conversion for 7-0.

But Peebles hit back just two minutes later when Murray Brown split the Biggar defence before feeding Ruaridh Clinch who coasted over for a try converted by Raeburn to level the scores.

But Biggar then produced a series of tilts at the Peebles line with Robbie Lavery, Andrew Orr, Greene and Jardine all to the fore.

Ball was moved left to Bradford who crashed over from short range for Biggar’s second, again converted by Green for 14-7.

However it was soon level pegging at 14-14 when Ruairdh Britton’s pass to Brown split the retreating defence and he crossed for a try which Raeburn converted.

Green’s penalty put Biggar ahead again before Bradford rounded off a fine move with his second try which Green converted to put Biggar 10 points up.

A Peebles try brought it back to 24-19 at half-time, but two Green penalties after the interval seemed to hav.e the hosts on easy street at 30-19.

This position looked even more unassailable when saw Peebles’ Roddy Guiney issued with a yellow card.

But, crucially, Biggar were unable to increase their lead while Peebles were a man down.

A Biggar error then gave Peebles another chance to attack which they took when Stoddart scored his second, Raeburn converting to make it 30-26.

After Biggar’s Jamie Orr was yellow carded, the visitors won it at the death when Callum Anderson plunged over and Raeburn converted.
