BMX riders roll into Cumbernauld for National Youth Series

Scotland’s most promising young BMX riders rolled into Cumbernauld on Sunday for the latest round of the ScottishPower National Youth Series to do battle on a brand new state-of-the-art track recently completed at Broadwood Loch.

Since 2013, the ScottishPower National Youth Series has been providing athletes aged eight to 16 years with high standard, multi-discipline, regional level racing throughout Scotland and now they have a facility to fit their ambitions.

Keith Anderson, chief corporate officer at ScottishPower, said: “The ScottishPower National Youth Series demonstrates our strong commitment to cycling in Scotland at all levels and across all the 
cycling disciplines.

“This fantastic new facility in Cumbernauld will hopefully further inspire our next generation of Olympic and Commonwealth Champions. It’s set to be another exciting weekend of competition and I wish all those competing the very best of luck.”

Lynne Munro, head of development at Scottish Cycling, said: “Thanks to ScottishPower’s sponsorship, we are able to provide our young athletes with the platform to realise 
their potential.

“The opening of the brand new BMX facility in Cumbernauld is a significant development in the world of 
BMX for we now have our first international standard track in Scotland. It would 
be great to see more cycling specific facilities, like 
this one, throughout 
the country.

“I’m very much looking forward to seeing our aspiring young champions put the first tyre tracks on it this weekend.”

The new facility was created thanks to funding from the £10 million Active Places Fund as part of Legacy 2014.

Riders competing at the weekend came from near and far, including local club Cumbernauld Centurions, Western Titans from Clydebank and Musselburgh 
Monarchs.

Raymond Reid, chairman of Cumbernauld Centurions, said: “It’s a significant milestone in bringing a world class BMX facility to Cumbernauld and North Lanarkshire and an incredibly exciting opportunity.

“The club is going from strength to strength and we are sure this new facility will be a major boost for this family-friendly participation sport. Anyone who can ride a bike can have a go, regardless of age.”

The ScottishPower Youth Series was established as a result of the energy company’s partnership with Scottish Cycling, the national governing body for cycling in Scotland.
