Bowlers are on the way up

CUMBERNAULD indoor bowlers have notched up a double success this year.

Both the gents and the seniors have topped their respective leagues.

The gents won nine out of ten games during the season and clinched the SIBA Division 2, Section B league tite with four points to spare and will now be playing in the First Division of the Scottish League next season.

During their successful season the squad have journeyed around the country to places such as Hawick, Dunfermline, East Kilbride, Fintry and Milngavie.

A club spokesman said: “Our team has a blend of youth and experience which has paid off thi season and we hope to be challenging for the First Division title next season.”

Cumbernauld played their last league game of the season against Teviotdale last Saturday and came out 85-74 winners. The results were: Gary Wilson, 21-20; Dougie Geal, 21-21; Paul Simpson, 19-16 and Jim Byron, 24-17.

The gents still have the Scottish Cup to contend with and are due to face Ardrossan at Paisley IBC on Saturday, February 12. Ardrossan will be a tough nut to crack but the local side are quite confident that they will come out on top.

The club’s second unfolded last Saturday when the senior team (over 60s) were crowned Scottish Seniors League West B champions when they beat Blantyre seniors by eight shots, 70-62. They now progress to the play-offs which take place at Paisley IBC on February 5.

The club are always looking for new members – ladies, gents and juniors. Tuition will be given to anyone wishing to take up bowling. Go along and give it a try.
