BOWLERS NO LONGER LEFT OUT IN THE COLD
A TOWN centre sporting facility has scooped one of the most generous lottery awards to be gifted to a local organisation in recent times.
Last winter, Cumbernauld Indoor Bowling Club was struggling to heat its sizeable and draughty premises in Tryst Road – in a move which saw members layer up in a bid to beat the plummeting temperatures.
Now they can enjoy their hobby in a far more comfortable environment after lottery grant scheme Awards for All decided that the club would be a worthy recipient of a whopping £7553 windfall.
And the cash has enabled members to buy and install a toasty new heating system, just in time for winter!
An Awards for All spokesperson said that the club was just the sort of organisation that they were keen to support.
She said: “We are delighted to have made this award to Cumbernauld Indoor Bowling Club.
“Awards for All makes grants for people to take part in art, sport and community activities.
“This group is a great example of the type of projects we fund as it provides a vital service to the local community by giving older and disabled people a place to socialise and exercise.”
Cumbernauld Indoor Bowling Club secretary, David Fraser, says club officials and members are thrilled with the timely cash boost.
He said: “Last year we were literally playing bowls wearing woollen hats and with our coats on.
“Considering that most of our members are aged 60 and over, that was hardly an ideal situation.”
“We want to say a very big thank you to Awards for All – we are extremely grateful for this very generous donation they have made to our club,” he added.
Mr Fraser stressed too that the club is on the lookout for members and that anyone – of any age - who wishes to join will be made very welcome.
The club secretary continued: “In the past we had up to 1500 members.
“Now we have around 300 which is still sustainable but we really would like to attract more.”
