Boxing club gets champ

Kilsyth Golden Gloves Boxing Club finally have their first ever senior champion after one of their boxers took a title at the weekend.

Steven Beattie represented the club, who operate out of the Burngreen Hall in Kilsyth, and competed in the senior West of Scotland championships at the Marriot Hotel on Friday.

The 22-year-old, who fought in the 64kg, took the title after winning his fight.

He qualified for the finals of the competition after beating two of the favourites in a contest which was held in the Pivot Centre, Moodiesburn last month, as the News and Chronicle previously reported in the last edition.

One of Steven’s coaches James Currie also won the same title 49 years to the day that his prodigy won.

James was a boxer with many Glasgow clubs when he took the title.

He now coaches young fighters at Kilsyth Golden Gloves Boxing Club, and is well known in the town.

The club’s Francie Connor wishes to thank physiotherapists Claire Bradley for helping Steven prepare for the fight.

He said: “Claire has been great and she really helped Steven prepare for the fight.

“The club are really grateful to her for all her help.

“ The coaches are absolutely delighted with Steven’s win.

“It is a first for the club.

“The club have never had a senior champion, and now we do.”
