Andrew helps Scotland to victory

YOUNG Cumbernauld boxer Andrew Tham, making his debut for his country, helped Scotland to victory in a fantastic day of international boxing.

Bringing the curtain down on a hugely successful Home Internationals series, boxing fans filled Meadowbank to see Scotland’s youths and juniors take on their counterparts from Northern Ireland.

Broadwood ABC member Andrew (pictured in blue) saw off the challenge of experienced Neil McClurkin with an impressive performance in the 50kg category.

There was not much to call between the two boxers in the first round with McClurkin throwing a series of right and left hooks, but Tham kept his guard up and maintained his composure.

McClurkin upped his work rate in the second to try and find a way through but Tham stayed solid throughout and took every opening he got. With both boxers looking to find a clear breakthrough there was an explosive start to the final round.

McClurkin landed the first jab, but Tham responded with a series of telling blows and took the bout by a clear margin, to help Scotland to an 8-6 victory.
