Break in the action for junior sides

Kilsyth took their points tally to 12 at the weekend, with a 3-1 away win at East Kilbride Thistle, while Cumbernauld lost for the fifth time in six games, 3-2 against Rutherglen Glencairn at Guy’s Meadow.

The results leave Rangers just a point behind table toppers Ardrossan while United prop up the division with only three points.

Kilsyth assistant manager Martin Mooney took charge of the side as boss Eric Sinclair was on holiday.

Mooney said: “I was delighted considering how it started - to lose a goal after a minute when you’ve been left in charge is a bit of a nightmare.

“Big Hughesy, our centre half, pulled up in the warm up, so that lost us a bit of height. We’re far from the biggest team anyway.

“Their goal came from a set-piece, we were a bit of a mis-match height-wise. But they got a few set-pieces after that, and they had a big centre-half coming up to take long throw-ins into our front post area, but we adjusted well and they didn’t threaten much after the goal.

“At half-time we were 2-1 up and we just took it from there and looked comfortable.”

Cumbernauld boss John Queen returned to the dugout and watched his injury-ravaged side surrender a 2-1 lead.

He said: “We’re dealing with a lot of injuries just now, we’ve got about six of our regular starters out at the moment.

“It’s not like it is at clubs like Irvine Meadow where they have squads of 18 or 19 top players, we don’t have the funds to do that.

“On Saturday we went one-nil up and they scored from a speculative cross when an error from our keeper let it in.

“We scored a wonder goal and went 2-1 up and looked comfortable, but another two errors cost us dearly.

“After the game, you might have seen five goals, but you’d still be asking for your fiver back. There was a lot of effort, but no real quality.”

A chance to draw breath with no fixtures this weekend, but the league action returns on October 1 with Kilsyth away to Renfrew and Cumbernauld visiting Girvan.
