Clyde still on good form

Fresh from their League Cup victory over Second Division Brechin City, The Bully Wee put title favourites Peterhead to the sword at Broadwood with a fine 2-0 win.

A 20-yard strike from midfielder John Sweeney on the stroke of half-time, and an accurate downward header by Steph McDonald with 15 minutes to go, were enough to ensure all three points stayed in Cumbernauld.

Manager Jim Duffy was full of praise for his young players and their work ethic.

He said: “I was absolutely thrilled about the performance and the result.

“Of course football is based on results but, from our point of view at the moment, with such a young squad, the development of the players is as important so the performance mattered as well.

“Any win against a side from a higher division gives you a lift, and the Brechin game certainly did that for us recently.

“We’ve played against two teams [Berwick Rangers and Brechin City] the last couple of weeks who have more resources and higher expectations than us, and we played very well.

“That gave us a lot of confidence ahead of the Peterhead game and I think that showed throughout the match.

“On occasions you’ll have some players who will catch the eye more than others but I think everybody contributed and worked very hard on Saturday.”

JC Hutchison and loan signing Felip Mentel are currently locked in an intriguing battle for the number one jersey.

Hutchison was between the sticks for the Brechin game at Glebe Park, but lost his spot to the Slovakian at the weekend.

Duffy continued: “I decided to bring Felip in and I think he did look comfortable for much of the game. He was protected very well by the players in front of him though.

“JC done well up at Brechin but I had a tough decision to make, as the manager it’s my job to make those calls.”

According to the bookies, if Peterhead don’t take the Third Division title, Paul Hartley’s Alloa Athletic will.

So it should come as no surprise then that next up for Clyde on Saturday is a trip to face The Wasps at Recreation Park.

Duffy added: “We couldn’t have asked for a tougher start but we’ve done well so far and I think if we’re up for it and work hard then we’ll be in with a chance at Alloa.

“It means playing on an artificial surface which I think gives any team that’s used to playing their home games on it an advantage.

“It’ll be difficult, but I’m sure we will have learned more about ourselves after the game.”
