Colts talk about settling into their new home Broadwood

IF you had told the players or coaches of Cumbernauld Colts that they would one day be playing the beautiful game under the bright lights of Broadwood stadium, they would have probably laughed in your face.

Fast forward to 2013, and Broadwood is very much the home of the town’s largest community football club.

Started in 1969, Cumbernauld Colts have gone from strength to strength over the last few years amassing a base of around 400 footballers and 80 coaches who play from boys’ club level to amateur.

Despite the numbers, the club was fragmented with teams meeting up in different pitches in areas all across the town.

But a cash injection of £380,000 from the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities Scheme and further funding of £70,000 from North Lanarkshire Council made way for the club to permanently use Broadwood.

“I think from a football perspective, you can’t get much better than this. The move has made a huge difference to the football club,” explains chairman Stewart MacKenzie.

The News and Chronicle recently visited the club to find out how they are settling into their new home and to find out their plans for the future.
