Craig rounds off season with a third

CUMBERNAULD racing driver Craig Mitchell was once again back on the podium at Brands Hatch at the weekend in the conclusion of the 2011 March Racing Academy Sports 2000 Championship.

Following a recent third place finish at Silverstone, practice went well on Friday in preparation for the Saturday qualifying. Craig only managed a seventh place in the 20-minute qualifying session having to pit on two occasions to attend to a fault.

On Sunday Craig started well, immediately passing the brilliant guest driver Neil Burroughs. By the time the pack had all settled down and at around ten laps Craig was up into fifth and only two-and-a-half seconds off the lead car and things were going nicely, but the car was struggling to find clear air away from the high down-force guys in front, who were all having a great battle.

On lap 23 Craig was up into fourth and on lap 31 Craig got into a podium slot with only some seven laps to go.

The car made it to the chequered flag with the second-placed car only some four seconds ahead after the 30 minute race, guest driver Neil Burroughs taking the win with a master class display of his exceptional talent.

Craig said: “I was very pleased to be able to hold on to the main pack for most of the race as the car was always going to struggle on the short circuit. Certainly I did my best and got a great result in the final round”.

So a third place to finish the season which at times has been dogged with small technical issues with the Lola.

Overall Craig finished fourth in the Sports2000 Championship for 2011 – a fantastic result.
