Craig’s opening shot on target with Loaded Gunn

CRAIG Mitchell, sports car racing driver from Greenfaulds, was delighted to take a podium slot at the opening round of the Fastwebmedia.com Sports2000 Championship 2012.

After qualifying fifth, in a strong grid of over 40 cars, Craig knew that with a few final handling changes he could have a shot at the podium at the Formula 2 weekend at Silverstone GP circuit.

Having finished fourth in the 2011 Championship in his Lola T88/90, Craig is hoping for a strong season in the “state of the art” Loaded Gunn TS11 in which the Swindon-based team has given Craig the opportunity to showcase his obvious talent. The Loaded Gunn’s modern aero design differs greatly from the low down-force Lola and similar cars did in fact win the championship in 2010 and 2011.

Craig started well from fifth place and was quickly into fourth, passing last year’s champion, who suffered contact from others going into Copse.

At the mid-point Craig was some four or five seconds off the leading cars but with consistent quick laps he managed to claw his way back into contention for the podium, passing the MCR car of Patrick Sherrington on the final lap and taking third place. Craig will actually pick up invitational sport car ace Matt Manderson’s second-place points, as this guest driver is not registered for the championship. This rounded off the weekend very nicely.

The next round of the championship will be held at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire on the weekend of May 12/13. Keep up to date with the latest news at www.craigmitchell.info.
