Cumbernauld are champions

Maryhill 0Cumbernauld United 2Central District League Division OneTHERE were scenes of jubilation at Maryhill last Wednesday when, at the end of the game, news came through that Shotts had failed to win at Perthshire ensuring that United were league champions.

Cumbernauld's league campaign has been sensational and huge congratulations are due to manager John Queen, assistant manager 'Junior' Gibson and, of course, the wonderful group of players who have worked so hard for this success.

After the unexpected defeat by Blantyre Vics, United had to get points from their second last league fixture and they went about this task with complete professionalism.

The first half of the match was played at a frantic pace and Maryhill certainly didn't look like a team at the bottom end of the league table.

There were a few scares at the United goal, but Cumbernauld stuck to the task and gradually began to play the football the supporters have been enjoying this season.

Their superior skills brought them a reward just before the interval when Danny Burns was fouled in the box and Kenny Jarvis expertly slotted home the resultant penalty.

After the break United came out full of confidence and scored a second when Jim Steele's shot rebounded to Ben Miller, who sent a flashing right foot shot past the Maryhill goalkeeper.

Although the home team tried hard they found the United defence, and Andy Dearie and David Marsh in particular, in great form.

A fine win and a great night of celebration for the best Cumbernauld team for many years.
