Cumbernauld-based Lady Rocks miss out on titles

None were crowned Scottish Cup Champion but the showcase of talent from the local team was outstanding.

The under 18 women lost the crown against a consistent St Mirren. These two teams are a familiar fixture in the Scottish finals and were sure to provide an action paced spectacle.

Lady Rocks were quick to put up the points, quickly going four ahead early on. Both sides have several players with international experience in their line-ups and this showed with both teams proving difficult break down, keeping it a low scoring opening period.

It was the Lady Rocks who had the better of the opening minutes in the third quarter, putting points on the board as well as drawing the Saints in to foul trouble. But St Mirren bounced back strong. It was sure to be a tense, exciting finish to the game and it definitely was, with a final score of Lady Rocks 50, St Mirren West College Scotland 62.

Michelle Bradley and Irene McCauley finished on top for the Rocks with ten points each.

Captain Taylor McKeown commented: “We worked well as a team, but we have a couple of things we need to work on the rest of the season”.

The under 16 women side faced St Mirren again on Sunday morning, but St Mirren proved to be too big of a challenge for a well organised and hard working Lady Rocks side. The Paisley based club which was playing at their home ground took the win.

Under 16 women coach Tony McDaid said: “St Mirren played very well.

“It took our girls a while to adapt to the pressure. I am happy with my players’ performance, they are young under 16 players and we need to remember this is a learning process for them so I am absolutely proud of all of them”.

Former Scottish Cup Champions City of Edinburgh Kool Kats took the dream away from Lady Rocks senior women on a disappointing final for the Rocks team.

The Rocks, under coach Colin Haldane, are undefeated this season and started the game strong, but the Kool Kats forced the Rocks in to some turnovers and punished them on the break, keeping themselves in it and testing the Rocks with a full court defence

It wasn’t to be this time and Kool Kats saw the game out. The final score Lady Rocks 62,City of Edinburgh Kool Kats 72.

Lady Rocks are a family run club that was started back in 2006.

Formed as St. Maurice Basketball Club, the club joined forces with Glasgow Rocks in 2009 and became the female division of Scotland’s only professional basketball team.

The Rocks have produced players who have played for Scotland at international level throughout all age groups as well as producing coaches who have coached at international level.
