Cumbernauld footballer begins Olympic journey

AN OLYMPIAN from Cumbernauld will make the history books today by representing Great Britain in the women’s football team.

Ifeoma Dieke will play against new Zealand in the opening game of the Olympics at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium taking her place in the first-ever Great Britain women’s football team.

The defender, who is from South Carbrain, spoke to the News & Chronicle ahead of the opener and beamed that it was such an honour to represent the UK on arguably the world’s greatest sporting stage.

“I feel blessed and honoured to be playing football at the Olympics. I am in a unique situation as this is the first Great Britain women’s football team and that is never going to be taken away from me.”
