Cumbernauld see off Wanderers challenge

Despite all the postponements for wet weather on Saturday, the pitch at Auchenkilns was in great condition, and both teams looked to make full use of the good conditions. In the early stages of the game, Wanderers had the lion’s share of both possession and territory, but the Cumbernauld defence remained solid.

In the forwards, Greenock had the advantage in the scrums, whilst Cumbernauld had the upper hand at line-outs, but neither could find the break. The breakthrough eventually came after Greenock secured turnover ball on their own 22, but a dropped pass, allowed McLaughlan to kick it forward, and sprint through to the line. At half time, Cumbernauld were fortunate to find themselves one score up.

The try just before half time seemed to instil greater confidence in the home side, and they started to balance out the territory and possession stats. The dominance of the Greenock scrums continued in the second half, and this gave them some several positive attacking options, but great defensive work kept them out.

Cumbernauld extended their lead, when Strang burst over to score at the posts, followed shortly by Thompson scoring in the corner. Despite the two quick tries the boys from Greenock never gave up.

Cumbernauld completed the scoring with two minutes to go with another try for Strang, to give a final score of 22 points to nil.
