Cumbernauld too strong for their French hosts

EMS Bron 19

CUMBERNAULD Rugby made their recent bi-annual trip to the new town’s twin Bron in what was the 30th anniversary of this tour.

After a 24-hour bus trip and two days of festivities it was a weary team that took to the park. Within five minutes the hosts caught Cumbernauld cold, with many of the players still coming to after a brief warm up. The writing at first seemed on the wall and a landslide victory for EMS Bron looked on the cards.

Then it all seemed to click for the away team. Wallace sped through to even the scores after a superb slip pass from Cowie, Kay then levelled the scores with the conversion. This rattled the hosts who were now struggling to cope with the aggressive rucking and the quick ball it was creating. The Cumbernauld backs, superbly marshalled by veteran stand-off Greig Kay, were now cutting through the French defence with ease and captain Cowie twice capitalised on this with two excellent individual tries in either half. Kay also collected a score to add to his five conversions. The forwards also got in on the act of scoring with David Jamieson rampaging over for a brace, the French defences perhaps being a little too hospitable at times!

The weekend culminated in a civic reception hosted by the mayor of Bron, highlighting the high esteem the relationship between the two rugby clubs are held by their respective local authorities.

The club would like to thank both Tennents and North Lanarkshire Council for their support.
