Cumbernauld wrestlers are Scottish champs

TRYST Lions Wrestling Club recently yielded a haul of medals from the 2012 Scottish Open and Derbyshire Open.

The Scottish Open was held at Bellahouston Sports Centre. The club’s wrestlers performed exceptionally well, with Joe McCluskey, Mark Boyce, Ross Connelly, Nathan Ferguson, Lewis Waddell and Mark Ritchie becoming Scottish Champions by capturing the gold. Taylor McCann, Stuart McKay and William Crawford earned Silver while Ciaran Keelan, Josh McEwan, Sean McDonald, and Lee McKeown all obtained bronze medals. Josh Ryan also placed fourth while Scott Pirie was extremely unfortunate to retire due to injury.

Then a week later on the 15th, the Derbyshire Open was held in the Wirksworth Leisure Centre, Derby. Ross Connelly won the gold with Nathan Ferguson, Lee McKeown and Lewis Waddell taking silver. Youngster Ciaran Keelan also performed well to bring home bronze.

Coach Steven McKeown joyfully expressed: “Winning so many medals at the Scottish is a great achievement, and then to follow that up in Derbyshire shows that the effort put in by coach Dave Connelly and myself to build a new generation of wrestlers is starting to pay its rewards. These results prove that we are one of the best clubs in Scotland.”
