Entry deadline extended for Cumbernauld 10k

There’s still time to enter North Lanarkshire’s biggest sporting event – Cumbernauld 10k, which takes place at 11.00am on Sunday 22 September at Broadwood Stadium

The deadline for entries has just been extended to 18 September so sign up now and take part in this popular event, which attracted over 670 runners last year. For the first time pace makers will take part to help runners achieve their target times, and entertainment at points along the route will provide a musical boost.

Children can also take part in the 1k and 3k runs on the day, and families can enjoy a variety of activities taking place at Broadwood throughout the event, including a climbing wall, music, dance and skipping demonstrations... There will also be a special guest appearance by Clyde, the Commonwealth Games 2014 mascot.

Primary 5 to 7 children can participate in 1k races starting at 10am, with 3k runs for S1 to S4 pupils at 11.10am. Medals will be presented to the winners and prizes will be on offer for the school with the most participants.

This year all the races will finish inside Broadwood Stadium, giving families and friends a chance to give the runners a grandstand finish.

Runners who register by 13 September will receive their race packs and t-shirts by post, while anyone entering after that will need to collect their pack before the event from Broadwood.

Organisers are asking runners to support the event’s charity partners by making a donation via their registration form or by collecting sponsorship to take part in the races. Last year’s event raised a total of £400 for the Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments and the Scottish Spina Bifida Association, both based in Cumbernauld.

Pace makers will be running at times to achieve finish times of between 45 minutes and 70 minutes, providing a visual guide to participants to complete the race in a specific time. They will be wearing bright colours with a balloon attached to them showing the time in which they will be competing.

North Lanarkshire Council and North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd organise the whole event in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire and Campsies Centre Cumbernauld Ltd with support from Strathmore Spring Water and the Cumbernauld News and Kilsyth Chronicle.

Road closures information

Residents and businesses around the Broadwood area are being reminded of traffic restrictions on Sunday 22 September to accommodate the annual Cumbernauld 10k event.

Letters have been sent to households in the Blackwood and Collingwood estates and local businesses to advise them of the road closures. Signs will be erected in the local area in advance of the event.

Between 9.30am and 1pm, the following roads will be closed:

· Atholl Drive, from the amenity path around Broadwood Loch to Broadwood Roundabout

· Westfield Road, from the west side of Broadwood Roundabout to Deerdykes Roundabout

· Mollins Road, from the junction with Deerdykes Roundabout to the junction with Drumgrew Roundabout

· Kirkintilloch Road, from Drumgrew Roundabout to Blackwood East Roundabout (the west bound carriageway only).

Police officers will be located at each of the key junctions and, if and when it is safe to do so, will allow vehicles in and out of houses and businesses during the restricted times.

However, North Lanarkshire Council is asking residents and businesses to allow for these temporary road closures when making travel plans for the Sunday morning.

Anyone attending the event at Broadwood Stadium is being directed to park at St Maurice’s High School, so there will be increased traffic in this area.
