Another poor result for Gers

Lanark United............... 2

Kilsyth Rangers............. 0

Stagecoach West of Scotland Super League First Division

THIS was another poor result for Rangers at Lanark last Wednesday evening.

One point from the last three league matches is hardly championship winning form and it looks increasingly unlikely that the flag will fly over Duncansfield next year. A play-off may position may now be the best hope but a much improved team would be needed to survive in the Premier Division on current form.

Lanark were pushing forward early on, but it was Rangers who almost opened the scoring after only seven minutes; a scramble in the home goalmouth saw a defender hit the underside of his own crossbar when attempting a goal line clearance. Fortunately for Lanark it rebounded outwards to be cleared.

It was really pretty even for most of the first half with noo scoring at the interval, and seemingly, none likely.

Lanark seemed a bit more purposeful after the restart and tested Dukes early on, then Marriot had a great efort which went just wide of the post. It began to look as if a goal was coming, although it was Lanark who were more likely to get it and sure enough, following on from a freekick, Marriot fired in a low shot past Duke.

The big Lanark defenders were effectively blocking out the much smaller Rangers attackers and were not afraid to use their bulk. so much so, that they had picked up four yellow cards in a 20-minute spell.

As the game entered injury time Rangers were still battling to try and salvage a point, but with virtually the last kick of the evening, Marriot got a clear view of goal and sent a great drive to the net to put the result beyond doubt.

Only three very tough games left, and at least two wins would be needed to be sure of a promotion place. It has all gone wrong at a vital time.
