Carrick hits late winner for Colts

Following last week’s physical Challenge Cup final win over the same side, the Colts knew to expect a similarly tough encounter this time around, again played at Wishaw Juniors ground.

The opening minutes saw both sides prod for an opening but with barely five minutes on the clock defence indecision let Jerviston right in front of goal which they gratefully accepted to go 1-0
in front.

The Colts were subjected to some tough treatment as the half progressed, but to their credit continued to try and play their passing
game.

As the half drew to a close, and the Colts were awarded a corner, the whipped in cross was met be the rising Reid who powered a decisive header past the stranded keeper.

As in the previous encounter the Colts starting to play themselves into the game as the second half progressed and it was very much against the run of play when Jerviston were awarded a penalty when Norrie clipped the advancing striker, this was subsequent stroked home to restore their lead.

The colts continued where they left off and did not allow this set-back to distract them from the job in hand, as a number of chances were passed up it looked like it was not going to be their night.

But with ten minutes or so remaining the Colts got their reward when following some lovely fast flowing football the ball was cut back to Murney who stroked the ball home from closed range with the keeper rooted to
 the spot.

With extra-time looming the Colts finished the game off in some style a move from back to front involving a number of players saw Boyle make a strong run down the right, as approached the the box he crossed low in front of goal where the on-rushing Carrick lashed the ball high into the net to put the Colts in front for the first time.

The undisciplined Jerviston completely lost control after this as they saw their grip on the cup slip away and following an off the ball incident spotted by the assistant referee the referee had no option but to give the keeper his marching orders.

In the dying minutes he was followed by a colleague who stamped on Carrick after he was fouled.

The Colts played out the remaining few minutes with some ease to lift their second trophy of the season.
