Celtic go to Ibrox today for the first Glasgow derby of the season. Here’s a look at some of the Celtic connections for famous football players.
5. Peter Beardsley
Once pictured at Celtic Park in 1995 with a green and white Hoops scarf draped across his shoulders, the former Liverpool and Newcastle icon was a big fan of the club growing up and Tommy Craig had lined him up as a potential signing back in the early 90s if he was handed the manager’s job. However, the club’s decision to appoint Liam Brady blew any chance of a deal being struck.
6. Peter Reid
Ex-England captain Reid confessed to being a Celtic fan for over 50 years after watching them play against Liverpool at Anfield in the 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup. That sparked his initial admiration for the Glasgow giants.
7. Chic Charnley
Former Partick Thistle and Hibs ace Charnley is Celtic-daft but never got the chance to play for the club competitively. He did, however, make one appearance in a Hoops shirt during a friendly match against Manchester United in 1994, to which he admitted he could “die happy”.
8. Steve Evans
Current Stevenage boss Evans is another to have never hidden his love for the Parkhead side and he was in high spirits last year when Ange Postecoglou guided his team to a 4-0 derby win over Rangers on the same day his side had recorded a victory, stating in a post-match interview: “It’s a great day when we win & Celtic beat Rangers!”
