Clyde slide continues as Queen's deny them play-off place

The defeat - Clyde’s third from four games against Queen’s this season with the other match ending in a draw - leaves Barry Ferguson’s men needing to beat Stirling Albion at Broadwood this Saturday to guarantee being part of the promotion deciders.

Former Queen’s Park ace John Gemmell was drafted in to face his old club and had an early chance but his shot on the turn was too high.

David Gormley was then put clean through but after rounding ’keeper Willie Muir, rathern than shoot he chose in vain to try to find Jamie Watson.

The home side made the most of that let-off to take the lead from the penalty spot after 22 minutes.

Scott McMann brought down Paul Woods and Chris Duggan smacked home the spot kick.

Despite trailing, Clyde were looking threatening from dead balls and Gemmell almost got on the end of one set piece.

But Queen’s were looking dangerous on the break and John Carter led a counter attack which gave Liam Brown the chance to shoot narrowly wide.

It remained 1-0 to the home side at the break but five minutes after the restart Queen’s doubled their advantage.

Sean Burns crossed low to the near post where Vinnie Berry was lurking and after getting a lucky break of the ball off the shins of Clyde defender Scott Linton he stroked it past John Gibson into the corner of the net.

A Gibson save prevented Woods adding a third goal before Clyde pushed forward to get back in the match.

Gormley and Jordan Kirkpatrick were unable to get the ball past Muir before Clyde did reduce the deficit on the hour.

Kirkpatrick’s cross was nodded back across goal by Mark McLaughlin and Gemmell was on hand to head home from a couple of yards.

It was very much game on at that stage with Clyde now winning the midfield battles now and Gemmell thriving on the aerial clashes.

The pressure on the home goal was mounting and when Clyde won a corner with 18 minutes left the inswinging delivery was only half cleared by Muir before Burns completed the job.

In the closing stages McLaughlin struck the bar with a header as Clyde prepared to throw the kitchen sink at their opponents.

The frame of the goal again denied the visitors in the last minute when Linton’s effort came back off the bar and his attempt to score from the rebound was deflected wide.

But that was as close as they came and the final whistle brought confirmation that Clyde - now without a win in five games - had slipped from second to fourth in the table with just a game to play.
