Clyde take derby bragging rights with win over Partick Thistle

A goal from Ally Love 20 minutes from time settled Saturday’s other traditional Glasgow derby in Clyde’s favour at Broadwood.

Love was perfectly positioned to beat Jamie Sneddon with a left-foot volley after the Partick Thistle keeper had saved from David Goodwillie.

It was enough to earn Clyde victory in the first league encounter between the historic rivals since March 2009, which Clyde also won 1-0 thanks to an own goal from current Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell.

Thistle arrived at Broadwood as title favourites in the eyes of many experts following their enforced demotion from the Championship, but they left empty-handed and, except for Sneddon, would have been on the end of an even heavier defeat.

Love was the first to threaten, just wide with a chip from the edge of the box and Ross Cunningham then saw an effort diverted behind by Ricky Foster.

Sneddon kept Thistle on level terms just before the interval when he stopped a powerful Goodwillie volley and early in the second period Kristoffer Syvertsen cracked a shot against the post.

The visitors also struck the frame of the goal, following a Blair Spittal free-kick, and Martin McNiff then had to make a vital interception to deny former Kilsyth Rangers striker Salim Kouider-Aissa, on loan to Thistle from Livingston.

But it was the Bully Wee who broke the deadlock in the 70th minute thanks to Love’s well-struck shot.

And the home side might well have added to their score with Sneddon producing three fine late saves to keep out a Chris Johnston shot and two further efforts from Goodwillie.
